If you’ve been thinking about buying a new SUV in the next year or two, keep reading. Toyota has just revealed the brand-new 2026 RAV4, and it’s coming to Australia in the first half of next year.
At Ausloans, we help thousands of Aussies get car loans every year, so we stay up to date with all the new models hitting the market. And we can tell you right now – this new RAV4 is going to be a popular choice.
Why? Because it’s got a completely new look, the latest technology, and for the first time ever in Australia, a plug-in hybrid version that can drive up to 100km on battery power alone.
Let’s break it all down.
The RAV4 has been one of Australia’s most popular SUVs for years. But this new version looks and feels completely different from the one you’re used to seeing on the road.
Toyota has redesigned the outside of the car with sharper lines and a more aggressive shape. It looks sportier and more modern, especially if you go for the new GR Sport model.
Inside, it’s been updated with a more rugged feel. That means it looks tough and ready for anything – perfect if you love going on weekend trips or just want a car that feels solid and dependable.
The big news for Australia is that we’re finally getting a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) RAV4. That’s a car that runs on both petrol and electricity – and it can drive up to 100 kilometres just on the battery. That’s far enough for most people to get to work and back without using any fuel at all.
It uses a 22.7kWh battery – that’s big for a car this size.
It can charge quickly: 80% in just 30 minutes using a fast charger.
It also supports home charging, and will fully charge in about 3 hours on an 11kW charger.
The all-wheel-drive version can go from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. That’s very quick for an SUV.
If you’re not ready for a plug-in yet, Toyota is still offering the RAV4 as a regular hybrid. That means it charges itself as you drive – no need to plug it in. These models have a 2.5-litre petrol engine with Toyota’s latest hybrid system, and you can get them in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Toyota is also releasing a new version of the RAV4 called the GR Sport. It’s got:
Big 20-inch alloy wheels
A more aggressive black honeycomb grille
Red stitching on the seats
Aluminium sports pedals
Extra support under the car for a more stable drive
Even though the engine is the same as the standard model, the GR Sport handles better thanks to changes in the suspension and steering. It’s perfect if you want something that stands out on the road.
Toyota has upgraded the interior too. There’s more room in the centre console, two USB-C ports for charging your phone, and proper buttons for the air conditioning and drive modes – not just everything on a touchscreen.
There’s also:
A 12.3-inch digital display in front of the driver
A big 12.9-inch infotainment screen in the middle
Toyota’s new software system, which is easier to use and gets updates over the air (like your phone)
Everything inside has been designed to feel modern, clean, and easy to use.
Toyota has added even more safety tech to this new RAV4. You’ll get things like:
Cameras that give you a 3D view around the car
Warnings when other cars are coming across your path
Lane assistance that can change lanes for you on highways
A new parking feature that lets you park the car using your phone – even when you're not inside it
Whether you’re an experienced driver or just starting out, these features help make driving safer and less stressful.
Toyota says the new RAV4 will arrive in Australia in the first half of 2026. It’s already creating a lot of buzz, especially the plug-in hybrid version, since it’ll be Toyota’s first PHEV sold in Australia.
Not all versions are confirmed for our market yet. For example, in the USA there’s also a special “Woodland” edition with all-terrain tyres and outdoor-friendly features. But for now, Australian buyers can look forward to the hybrid, PHEV, and GR Sport models.
